Nordvegen: Moster

  • 18:00

A musical journey from past to present.

Norwegian composers Einar Selvik and Ivar Bjørnson created a work solidly rooted in our Norse past for last year’s festival. The prize-winning musicians now continue their musical journey along Nordvegen, the shipping route from which Norway got its name.

In various small places in Western Norway of longstanding history and strong connection to the sea, the music is performed at atmospheric and intimate concerts, expressing millennia-old traditions and ideas still resonating with people today.

From the Faroe Islands, singer and composer Eivør, known for her strong, yet delicate voice, joins in on the journey. Based on the musical heritage from her home island, she has created her own unique sound using elements from a variety of musical genres – as is evident also in the music of composer duo Selvik/Bjørnson.

With Eivør’s music, Nordvegen travels further west while simultaneously making detours into some of Selvik and Bjørnson’s expanded repertoire. Material from their respective bands, Wardruna and Enslaved, as well as some of their other compositions are recreated in Nordvegen’s characteristic sound, giving us an interplay of old and new tunes and instruments. The result is a unique work of melodious story-telling, pointing to who we are and where we come from.

‘Past and present beautifully combined in a little stroke of genius’
